A Word From Our Founder

Joe Dransfield MA MBA FRAeS FCMI

Retired Royal Navy Captain

My 28-year career to becoming a Captain in the Royal Navy took me on a varied leadership journey from flying operational missions to commanding multi-national forces at sea. Whether operationally deployed, mentoring NATO crisis response teams or serving as a military professor at the US Naval War College, I have been required to both make decisions of real consequence and to teach decision-making skills. I have repeatedly seen how even small decisions can compound into major outcomes.

Years of operational practice led me to study decision-making formally. One of my conclusions is that we are not as good at making decisions as we think we are, with confidence often exceeding competence. The evidence is clear that decision-making is a skill that can be deliberately coached, trained, and developed. Decision Horizon closes that gap.

The realisation that superior decision-making is a superpower that is all too often hiding in plain sight led me to write The Decisive Edge: A Naval Aviator's Guide to Better Decision-Making (currently in press). This includes a proprietary framework, the DECIDE Pathway™, which provides a practical approach to strengthening judgment, decision alignment, and reflective learning.

Decision Horizon is primed to help people and organisations deliberately build decision-making capability, rather than leaving your most consequential choices to habit, hierarchy and hope.
